use battleship's forever's ship builder to build ship sprite things

 

it's a top down game but there's no reason why you can't build stuff from the side

attached something I built with it that I'm using as a template for a starbound custom ship (with some modifications of course)

 

You can also convert .png files into actual ships (as in convert .png to ingame blocks).

Here's an image of the same ship, increased 4x, manually interpolated (don't know how to do it automatically, I am scrub at pixel art), added some stuff and a teleporter spawn point pixel, and imported into Starbound.
