I recommend Starbounder - Starbound Wiki over that site, Starbounder is the official Starbound wiki

Theres little information in both of these links. I just think there should be some sort of established base here for the races, ya know?

It's something we've wanted to do for awhile, it's just very difficult to make a background for each race that most people can agree with and enjoy. Chucklefish is not exactly roleplay friendly, and it has its disasters when it is taken too literally or otherwise at face value. Hopefully this thread will help flesh some stuff out, though I would like to see a separate thread for each race.

Like, I wrote up a whole big thing on avians, and it was pretty balanced and all based on the obvious lore.

There were many tears, and much rage to be had by those who read it. Despite it being almost completely copy/pasted lore info I found.

Speaking of Floran. I don't like the idea of Floran's eating the their dead.

Any particular reason why? Just because it's a common thing doesn't mean EVERY Floran has to. I would imagine the cannibalism is only really prevalent in the more savage tribes.

I believe that some Florans, probably some older, smarter ones, like Nuru and Wisemen and Shamans are able to do weird shit. Perhaps Wisemen are able to work tech and Shamans are able to work plant manipulation.

Their weapons and armour are built from reverse engineering scavenged technology, gathered by... Well... gatherers! And their weaponry consists from toxic, or durable plant matter, perhaps combined with some more conventional weapon parts, but there's a LOT of item descriptions that IMPLY that Florans can 1. Work with tech 2. Can grow/control plants and 3. There's weapons in the game without description that imply they can combine this, like the Floran Teslastaves you can find in the Greenguard Floran prison dungeons, which I believe are a combination of some mechanical parts, most likely obtained from Glitch or other machines and some plantmatter.

Khaltor, no, for the last time WE DON'T FOLLOW THEIR CANON. We have our OWN that uses pieces of theirs.

Antares has always had, as far as I know, a policy to enforce the game's canon, where possible.
The devs clearly state they can, and a lot of items and other sources imply they can, so arbitrarily deciding they can't because you don't like it, is ridiculous.

It's not even overpowerd, we can all rp ways to get weapons, Florans just rp the growing process, while others rp the construction and ordering parts / creating parts. Keep in mind, the amount of Florans who would be able to pull that off would be a minority, comparable as to how the majority of Florans are rather savage and canon fodder soldiers/hunters.

The growing process and the materials needed, as well as the difficulty would probably be comparable with the same problems that come with creating specialised weaponry, the more complex the weapon, the harder it is to actually succeed and I'd reckon that perhaps the Florans alter the plants in a way where they are able to "absorb" certain metals in order to strengthen them. This would explain why smashy tree is made from metal though you can make the argument that it's probably just game mechanics.

The Slashening - Starbounder - Starbound Wiki

The Slashening is a green piece of weaponry, with impervium thorns, which sort of support my theory, although once again, you can argue it's just game mechanics.

Also Britton, calm the pluck down.
We barely have an established canon as is, and we're discussing the issue, so I'm going to argue that the game's canon states otherwise.

I don't think it is cannon to tell you the truth I have read all the lore books. Sure there was a refers about florans regarding Avian burial rituals as a "waste of meat". But that not mean the just eat their dead.

Don't get me wrong I get what you are saying that it is up to the player. I thing fern got reminded of them half a dozen times.

No, you are bringing up an issue that an administrator, the second highest power on the server, had already settled.

Doesn't matter, let the administrator deal with it then, if you've got nothing substantial to add to the discussion.

    > Main Forums > General Discussion > Lore Discussion

Kazyyk created this forum for discussion, and that's exactly what I'm doing.
I've brought arguments to the table, but you're too busy bitching because it's something you personally don't agree with, without actually giving me an argument why that wouldn't make sense in the Floran lore and why that would be disruptive in an RP setting.

As I see it, it's just racial hate bias, which I wouldn't expect from someone who constantly complained about the OOC bias people had towards the USAF.

Don't bring that shit up here. The USAF is gone and disbanded. I'm not bitching. I'm literally saying it's been settled and multiple moderators and an admin have said to stop.

I think it is best we calm down a little. Things are getting a bit heated.

Has anyone given any thoughts to Hylotl lore?

Sadly ChuckleFish hasn't given us much to go on... They're working on the Hylotl villages and the Hylotl dungeon, which is aparantly an underwater library loaded with lore, so we'll find out more then, I believe.

One of the things they changed in the lore is that Florans don't hate Hylotl, because the Florans don't even remember the war against them, and to the Hylotl it's ancient history as well, though they're still quite guarded and cautious around the Florans, but they're fine with interacting with the more docile ones.

Yeah, we need to focus on getting the Hylotl lore straight, seeing as we have little to go off of as it is. Seeing as it's based off the far east, possibly we could pick some things from history in the far eastern countries, like China, Japan, Tibet, possibly India even.

I'm going to suggest coming up with suggestions and not getting too caught up on CF's lore at all. Chucklefish lore is not consistent, clear, or encompassing by any means. I think we should take cues from Chucklefish that we like, and work off of it instead of trying to figure out what CF lore we will use that is "correct" or not.

EDIT: I know this is meant to be a physiological thread, but one thing specifically we should work out for the Hylotl is some kind of history. All we know about them is that Florans ate their homeworld, which doesn't even have a name.

You're forgetting that the Floran's whole identity revolves around combat.
Other races have culture, and are able to band together and cooperate easily, as Florans are still in the beginning phase of galactic integration, becoming accepting of these "meatbag" as actual people with emotions.

And about them being OP or not... What Wreth's trying to say is that culturally Florans are very tribal but their innate skills allow them to be relevant on a galactic scale, just like how the Apex are relevant, the Avians are relevant and pretty much any other race.

However, if you take away these abilties, like Wreth said, you don't give the Floran demographic any tools to work with. They're not overpowered, they've got the same "strength" or relevance as the other races, albeit that their "skill points" are distributed in places, in certain ways, that make them excel at that particular thing. Where Apex use their strict military doctrine and technology, where the Avians use religious zealotry and crystal tech, Florans use their savage, tribal, scavenging, reverse engineering and bonds with nature to accomplish their goals. This means that for the sake of "To consume, to spread, to multiply" they've got an innate edge over the other races, but overall they're not overpowered because they're grievously lacking in other areas.

Compare it to DND where you can have a bard with high diplomacy, bluff and loads of skill points invested in non-combat skills and just a light crossbow, and an Orc barbarian with VERY little skill points but who has invested in sick armour and sick weaponry. In case the barbarian gets mugged by two bandits, he'll cleave them up and be on his way, but the bard may be able to bluff his way out of it, or convince the bandits he's got nothing of value on him, and point them towards another group who look like they got money. In a situation where the barbarian is surrounded 1-10 he's dead, while the bard may still be able to talk his way out of it.

TLDR: The Florans aren't OP with their abilities, it's just a way to enable them, to make them relevant. Otherwise you might as well play a human, because it's hard to expect a Floran society to band together properly and form an organisation like humans can, with proper discipline and industry attached to it. They need their weird shit to even compare to humans in terms of relevance, which is stupid because they're supposed to be feared by the other races somewhat and they only excel at combat. Other races have an actual culture and stuff.

I disagree, I think the Chucklefish lore is a good basis to expand upon. I believe we only need a "vague" and "short" history to the races, as its not SUPER relevant, considering we won't be in the core system and interacting with the lore factions that much. Britton made a nice human history thing, with the USCM and the USAF faction on Antares as "history", it was brief and open to interpretation, which is FINE, we don't need to start making up history for the hylotl based on our earth's eastern history, rather it's fine to keep it vague for now and limited to what we /know/.

What needs to be decided however is racial physiology, technology, economy (not in this thread however), weaponry and combat mechanics. These cannot be "vague" or open to interpretation, because we use these to interact between one another. We have to keep in mind that our characters aren't historians, and a lot of the information we get from the codexes aren't available to the general public.

On the ever present topic of Floran guns and whether they're literally grown or not, I don't see what the problem is, considering how everyone and their dog has a gun in Antares.

A plant-matter building dedicated to growing guns would also work as an ICly destructable target for anyone who wants to deprive the Florans of their plant-guns. Makes far more sense than the typical "This assault-rifle was shipped from off-Sector" or "This assault-rifle was made by a company that doesn't have any ICly accessible buildings that would produce them".

Oh, and before someone throws the "BIASED!"-grenade, none of my characters use Floran guns, including Lugdash.
