    Pre-Resource Wars

Humanity was still divided as the year 2036 rolled around, but in one small act of unity, they were able to establish an orbital defence grid of synchronized satellites and defence systems capable of knocking out any nuclear ICBMs before they can reach their intended targets. Finally, the threat of nuclear war was ended, though this also succeeded in opening up an even uglier can of worms for humankind. Without the nuclear deterrent, nations that were hungrily eyeing their neighbors finally had a chance to move in without worry of starting a massive nuclear war with another superpower. This resulted in high tensions, heavy militarization, and even annexation. It was not all bad, however, as a manned Mars mission was finally embarked upon with the “Odysseus 2” shuttle. Though they were never able to return home, it was a great leap forward having finally put a person on Mars.

By the year 2080, the space race had been revamped in a big way, both pollution and the widespread hostilities motivated numerous countries to resume their efforts on the colonization of other worlds as Earth’s fossil fuel reserves enter an irreversible decline. The United Nations suffered greatly as a result of the exchanged hostilities and political unrest, losing many member nations in the following years. Trillions of dollars worldwide were sunk into numerous projects, ranging from more efficient fuels to highly sophisticated manned and unmanned spacecraft, humanity acknowledged they would not survive on Earth’s resources alone.

In 2128, a ship with a proper containment was able to house a miniature fusion reactor, one able to provide the magnitude of power necessary for the craft to function and fly. This allowed them to finally make another manned mission to Mars. Further progress was made when additional stations were constructed and placed in key locations around the moon and Mars’ orbit. This paved the way for the future colonization efforts that would take place, as these stations would be flown out and later act as refueling posts for passing vessels.

2140 arrives, and the first colony on Mars is established, followed by multiple others in the coming years. Mars was also to be slowly terraformed as operations commenced planetside, military and civilian. It was to become a forefront for humanity’s colonization of the stars, although progress was to become slow as a number of proxy wars had sprout up in the Middle East, South America, and numerous African countries.

Mainly insurgent wars funded by larger powers and gargantuan companies, they generated enough revenue and tension to satisfy those in power. In 2158, the wars came to a standstill, world powers using the money generated by the wars to fund their colonisation programs. Venus along with the moons of many planets were claimed one by one.

Decades passed, and in 2240, an alternative fuel source decreased the travel times between planets and solar systems. Interplanetary travel took days. Interstellar took weeks. The colonisation of Alpha Centauri had begun.

In 2252, discovery of extra terrestrial animals proved humanity may not have been alone in the universe. As time passed, humanity yearned for exploration, and with their newfound resources and era of peace, it was set in motion.

In 2333, Erchius was discovered on a desolate moon in the Tau Ceti system. Its exotic properties, coupled with the works of scientists made wormhole generation possible, decreasing travel times between most immediately adjacent celestial bodies take minutes.

By 2342, the Humans encountered the Apex, but due to the Apex isolationist values, the humans were driven and discouraged from trading with them. Encounters of the other races came soon after, however humanity as a whole refrained from trade as issues on the home front progressed.

However, even the resources in Sol were destined to run out. By 2390, resources became once more scarce. A war was brewing, and all it would take was a few sparks to ignite the fire.

The year is 2395. The Russian Federation recently underwent a failed socialist military coup, allowing the government to tighten its grip on its people and completely reorganise its military, along with instating a non-democratic, nationalist government. As a result, the government realised their desire to expand, undertaking small conquests within the Caucasus mountain region and central Asia. China, having loathed Russia for decades due to the abundance of much needed resources in Siberia, now had its reason to fufill its desires. China, under the guise of wishing to "protect its Asian brothers", launched an invasion into Siberia.

Russia's retaliation was swift and decisive. The mobilisation of the newly reorganised Federation Army saw a new side of warfare. China was driven back and Manchuria was annexed by Russia. Tensions between the two countries drew stares from nations around the world. However, peace maintained.

2396. The United States, over the past few decades, had become increasingly involved in European affairs, straying from its focus on its neighbors and foreign claims it had in the past three centuries. Tensions between the EU and the United States grew. The nations of the EU and even unaffiliated states sent an ultimatum to the US. Pull out, or there would be war. The US, realising a war with Europe would end to the favor of the European powers, and not the US, withdrew.

2397. As resources dwindled to critically low amounts, the major powers of Earth forged a group, called the United Systems of Terran Expansion, to make the effort of interstellar colonisation mainstream. The offworld colonies of Earth no longer had singular rulers. The colonies were territories of the United Systems, protected in a mutual effort by the powers. Efforts to spread to Alpha Centauri and Tau Ceti were redoubled.

However, these efforts were not quick enough. 2399. Grasping at straws, the US eyed Africa and the Middle East for its resources, China gathered support and troops for a second try at Russia. The United States launched an assault on the Arabian penninsula. The push quickly slowed, the forces of the quickly allying Arabian nations proving difficult to break. The United States struck up a deal with the powers of Europe, promising a sharing of resources so long as support was given. Russia, in its expansions, had reached the Middle East as well. It invaded Syria and northern Iraq, proving successful due to the Arabs' main forces being preoccupied in the south. The European and US forces soon drove the Arabs north, and the Arabs were overrun on a two-front war.

China took its second swipe at Russia, and similarly failed in the same fashion that it did in the first war. Fully annexed by Russia, China provided a whole new load of production and manpower for Russia.

The United States and Europe, hungry for more resources, had their hands forced to launch an assault on the Russian holds in Arabia. Savage fighting between the two armed forces ensued. So severe that Europe pulled out and cancelled its endorsement of the US. The US, fighting now alone, soon capitulated in Arabia. It starved for resources while Russia prospered. Russia again decided it needed more. It annexed multiple Eastern European nations. The rest of Europe failed to retaliate, due to their fear of the massive military might of the new Russia.

The United States again offered to assist Europe. The forces of Europe reluctantly agreed. Russia retaliated, launching an invasion of Europe. However, the invasion did not prove easy. Retaliation from European and US forces on home turf brought the fighting to a deadlock. Bombing of each nations' home fronts occurred. Raids from both sides on resource-rich foreign claims sustained the war effort.

2406. Unusual seismic activity in Antarctica alarmed scientists across the globe. As each attempted to warn their respective governments, the governments provided little response. They had a war to fight. However, in the later parts of the year, it became too much to ignore. The seismic events spread worldwide, causing natural disasters everywhere and prompting panic and alarm. Evacuation attempts started, but on a fateful day in late October, tentacles emerged from within the crust and began overtaking the surface of Earth. Within days, the surface was uninhabitable.

Those who managed to be evacuated, mostly consisting of political leaders, the wealthy, and those of useful professions, sought new homes on the colonies of the United Systems. The remaining political leaders met at a summit on Mars. They consolidated the power of the United Systems itself and turned it into a functioning government, forging the remaining forces of each nation into a standing military. A new bastion of humanity, they called it.
