Some astronomical problem would be more fun because space is fun. notatallbecauseiloveastronomyandplanetology
Still, it's a plausible and smart way to ensure that we have a canonical reason for leaving this part of space if the wipe happens. Also RP in the post-wipe will be fun, so /rushing/ to re-establish with few resources...
Suddenly, reality ceases to exist. All space and time is gone. There is no such thing as anything. There is nothing to understand the things that don't exist to be understood. There is a fundamental collapse in whatever foundation it is that lets reality be. Poof. ... and then it comes back once the server is restarted and everyone can continue on their merry way.
*nervous because he is questioning Lord Kazyyk of Antares, God of the Universerver* So wait, in this case "it comes back and everyone can continue on their merry way", does that mean everything is saved, just our characters, or nothing is saved and its a complete restart?
Depends on the update and what the community wants. Likely a vote would be held. If the planets /could/ be restored, and the community wanted them back, then everything would be saved. If they couldn't, then only characters would be preserved. Can't force everybody to start new characters, so that's off the table.
black hole eats antares: sounds fun my vote: like six bananas bundled together then crammed into an impossibly small hole filled with a sea of white hot pig feces
Here is an idea for what to do when everything gets wiped: A communications satellite picks up some anomaly and scientist working for that communications company realize it is a catastrophic (insert end of days situation here). The news is leaked and mass panic ensues. Various governments begin trying to order an evacuation of the sector and they post people at all major colonies to arrange the evacuation. Since the sector must be pretty big the average FTL ships would not be able to get out in time so a company called "Allied Aerospace" steps in offering space on a group of gigantic Inter-Sector transport ships. Governments would try to get people aboard the ships, however with very crowded living conditions the boarding officers start taking bribes from the rich people and soon the rich people have private suites while everybody else is in crowded cabins or cargo holds. Once one ship is full, it would depart and if necessary a second ship would carry the excess people (It would have to be a lot of people, not just seven). Eventually they arrive outside the sector and excess passengers (the poorest ones) would be sent down to a presumably uninhabitable planet to see if it is suitable for temporary colonization. This would continue for a while before marauders damage the ship killing of people (who consent to death, of course). The rich people and the ships crew would force people to work to repair the ship so they could return to the Antares sector. Upon returning it is revealed that the cataclysm has killed anybody who was left behind (Anybody who wanted to kill of a character fast.) They then begin working to return life to normal.
To be fair, every frontier had a government. The integrity of said governments was always questionable, but that's part of the fun.
people forget that frontiers last for a heartbeat before governments and what have you rightfully exploit them
The difference between Antares and historical frontiers is pretty freaking blatant. If you can't figure it out, you may need to rub the badass out of your eyes. Space is freaking huge. Arguably the vast majority of it would be "frontier" where-as only small spheres of influence would be logistically possible and centralized. Certainly with the technological levels at the moment.
