That said, my career has never been as noteworthy as it has been in this past month. This journey was clearly needed for me to realize, and fully comprehend that withering my life away in an oceanic prison of my own people has dwindled precious years off of the irreplaceable jewel that is my life. My travels have brought me here, to the Antares Frontier. The population is greatly varied in races and culture, where I have seen interactions I would have never believed were even virtually possible. Here, I have seen many Apex, free of their oppressive Miniknog, their lives varied from mercenaries to farmers. I have even seen docile, sometimes amicable Floran, like Silk-Spinner, whom specifically has been serving me an occasional glass of wine, or a brew of tea, to brace the harsh cold of New Uganda. It almost feels like home; only, I don't feel trapped anymore. I can go anywhere at my own free will. The stars are within my reach. Oh, the stars. Such a sight that I loved to see on those trips to the surface back home. Now, every night, I can peer out into the void, and find inner peace through those distant suns. I can reach out to every single one of them, now. I made the mistake already of settling down; exactly what I had left home to get away from. New Uganda needed me. There is a fantastic hospital, here. But, should I be here? I am making a confident profit once more, and dine well every night. But, I'm trapped again. I'm bound to my duty as a doctor -- no, a director. A human by the name of Charles, supposedly the founder of the New Uganda Hospital, entrusted me with its administration. He was so quick to entrust with it... which was the first thing that made me uneasy. I'm also questioning the ethics of the research performed by the staff, present and previous of the hospital... A line has to be drawn. ...The Miniknog are already far beyond that line. I dare not say more. I have met some interesting people. The ice typically gets broken when they show up in the hospital wounded, or I've rescued them from a scuffle off on another planet. The patients back home were never this interesting; and neither were their afflictions. In particular, the punkish enigma that is Ximena is someone I've bumped into on several occasions, now. I sometimes feel like she's been following me -- but at the same time, she seems to have a good heart under her tough visage. I have met other Hylotl out here, as well. Others that have escaped the confines of our submerged cities and our bitter Floran conflicts... for the most part. Shachi seems to be incredibly timid. I am inclined to think that she has had more trouble adjusting to the extroverted life out here on the Frontier, but she also has a heart of gold. Onisuma is another doctor, wizened through her medical expertise. Unlike Shachi, she seems bolder, assertive, almost intimidating. However, she's helped during an emergency more than once, now. Life is exploited out here in the Frontier. This doctor is always on call. > SEND JOURNAL _ Processing journal. Entry successfully submitted to server, Dr. Kazushi Padfoot. Ready! > I've recently responded to a distress call to rescue a Human victim of leg amputation, but the nature of the wound was undetermined. The presence of severe burn trauma worsening down the remaining leg leads me to theorize an explosives incident; however, the lack of information on the patient themselves makes this theory inconclusive. He had lost a potent amount of blood by the time I had beamed onto their ship with the trauma kit, where they had already lost consciousness. The good news is, it seems their vitals remained steady the entire time, and after cauterizing the wound and giving the patient a transfusion of blood and oxygen, they were safely admitted to the colony hospital, without a name. The associated persons were an Avian woman, and what I believe was another Human. The Human went by "Sol". Neither were able to provide the victim's name, or the context of the incident, but they seemed to both be associated with a private military corporation. This Sol was the leader, I believe. I was invited to join them, but I honestly can't say I understood the motivational speech I was given in order to do so. I did assure them that the hospital would always be open if they had wounded or sick in need of assistance, but I hardly doubt I would ever leave New Uganda to join these strangers... ...even if my moral prowess is being tested here by the day. Where should one draw the line as to what is a miracle of science, or a cyst of insanity? Can I consciously decide what is ethical, and what isn't, when that decision decides on the saving of my patients? ...Should I? I left my colony nearly a year ago, now. This is the first time I've ever been homesick. > SEND JOURNAL _ Processing journal. Entry successfully submitted to server, Dr. Kazushi Padfoot. Ready! > It has been a busy two months since my last entry, as a reader of these journals would expect. I am happy to inform that I am alive and well -- despite several predicaments this Frontier has thrown at me. New Uganda was razed as quickly as it was built by a coordinated AI attack. As indicated on my security report, my tether to the mother network was compromised, and severed before any malicious acts could be committed. Now that I am able to access this system once more, with improved anti-theft measures, it brings me to a sense of peace; something I have felt little as of the last entry. Firstly, I was scooped up into a private military following the destruction of the colony and my hospital. I had joined up, in support of this quiet collaboration that intended to ensure profit and safety through trade and security services. I quickly became the Chief Medical Officer and liaison to the commander, Solour. Yet another hefty title in such short time. I am still not sure whether or not my qualifications are what bring me to the high seats, or if everybody in Antares are foolish to trust strangers, or I'm too foolish to see through a ruse consequently resulting in my death. Perhaps even a combination of all three. Unfortunately, the latter became more close to becoming a reality than I'd have preferred. Our company was diseased with corruption, and criminal motives, and I could start seeing our numbers dividing off as a result of it. Morals and ethics inevitably conflicted interests for some, including myself, while others begun research on practices the Code deemed immoral. This corruption eventually led to my framing, and I was imprisoned by the security force of the Asani colony, Antares' former beating heart. Thankfully, justice was eventually served, in one way or another, and instead of being executed on account of attempted murder of the Hylotl security officer I had been fooled to believe was in danger, I was instead banished from visiting the colony, instead. Their view of "justice" was as flat-tuned as an old piano, but even still, I still count my blessings for surviving that ordeal. Since then, I cut ties entirely with Haven, and eventually the civil war plaguing its top brass led to its inevitable demise. Asani and many other primary colonies were wiped off of the star charts by what Solour believed to be a homicidal cult we had previously had been actively investigating. The timing was perfect, and I was certain that after everything, I could have become a suspect of this event, and so I remained inconspicuous for some time, until the tides settled. Now, my sister Pazi has come all of this way to find me. She has outfitted my medbay's computer with an "impregnable" firewall, and this retinal sensor to prevent an AI, or any person aside from me, from jeopardizing Seikatsu's sensitive data once more. The denizens of Antares are quickly rebuilding new colonies, and I am constantly at work tending to the sick and wounded who have no clinic or hospital to tend to them anymore. I wish Pazi hadn't come out here to this dangerous place for me, but she is adamant in staying. She's mentioned a man that she met who works at the new hylotl café we have here, and that girl's stubborn to convince otherwise to leave. I guess I can't complain -- I'm lucky to have her here to remind me of home. Once the research here is done. For now, I will sign off. There is work to be done, and my tea has already cooled while typing this. Tides carry you, kin. I will make sure Pazi reports in, as well. > SEND JOURNAL _ Processing journal. Log-In and authentication successful. Welcome, Dr. Kazushi Padfoot. Enter command: > JOURNAL ENTRY _ Initializing journal processor... Ready! > Hello, world. Life out here has gradually taken a turn for the better in the last few weeks. I've been able to find a nice colony to settle into: a temperate, oceanic place called Katune. The air is fresh, and the salty water can be still be whiffed from the hospital's waiting room. That is where I've extended my skills to. I figured that working in a dedicated hospital and serving as a physician for its denizens will serve a valuable purpose, until more colonies continue to appear again from all around. Old, friendly faces have appeared, as well. Shachi has taken up ownership of the bar, and is sheepishly respectful, as always. Bless her. Dr. Omizu is the Chief Medical Officer of Katune's hospital, and consequently my partner in the OR. Thank the tides it's not me in the high seat for once... I'm not cut out for leadership. Speaking of which, one of my ex-comrades, Mattulip, is working security here, as well. She is off life support, now, and that has seemed to help her well-being immensely. No sign of Solour, though Matt has told me he's already at work on another military company it seems. Hopefully, he doesn't do anything rash without me there to guide him. Like the Phoenix, this Frontier never seems to die... Instead, it finds new life from its ashes, and takes flight again. ...Perhaps poetry isn't my strongest suit. Stick to the textbooks, Kaz.
