The Drum Kit is probably the worst sounding instrument in all of Starbound. Sure, the Model M is just a bunch of clicks, but at least it isn't a mass of random sounds. If you disagree, just play some songs and see what you think. If you've found some songs that the Drum Kit plays well, please show me them so this instrument can redeem itself in my eyes.
Percussion ABCs are written differently than standard ABCs. You're not supposed to be playing normal songs on them.
As Pie said, yeah, percussion is written much differently. It can actually sound really nice, but it has to be for a .ABC file that's written for drums. You'll generally only see these on multi-part songs with a file specifically for percussion. In those cases, it's awesome. For an example of what I'm talking about, check out StarBards, they've got examples a-plenty. Also, it is so not the worst instrument ever. Look up the old microphones.
I miss my old microphone. I no longer have a way to truly explain to people how horrible Twitch's singing is now.
