I think it's about time we decided on a real name to define ourselves by. Antares wasn't meant to be a name (for those who remember it), but was meant to label our servers. Just to re-state, the name Antares was meant to refer to that particular server, not the community as a whole. The idea at the time was to have multiple servers, but it didn't turn out that way. Anyways, with our current second place standing (more daily votes for us would really help here), I think it'd help tremendously if we could solidify our position in the Starbound Community* by having a recognizable name. Let's discuss it, all of us, shall we? What should we, the community, be called? The fate of our name rests in your hands! *EDIT: I mean OOCly. A brand name. Easy to tell friends about.
I actually think Antares still fits. I've seen people refer to "the sector", meaning the combination of Alpha through X, and Antares has been mentioned as the unofficial name of that sector many times, from what I can gather and what I've personally seen. In this case I feel our particular section of the Starbound universe is that of the frontier, far past and beyond the "core worlds" (meaning the Sol system, Avos, the hylotl homeworld, etc. etc.). Alpha is the "near frontier", i.e. closer to the core worlds and more civilized, and X is "totally unregulated and lawless / bandits everywhere". Gamma and Delta represent the "wild west", and Beta is the "midwest", in this case meaning it's less regulated than Alpha, but still close enough that it isn't completely lawless like X/Delta/Gamma on occasions. I feel the "frontier" theme suits our server, both in terms of the players who roleplay within it - everyone carries guns, tries to take the law into their own hands, etc. - and in terms of the organizations - the colonies are largely independent of each other, there are separate governments and private militaries/militias trying to impose their own rules, etc. And overall, this collection of frontiers and sectors is called the Antares sector block, and is largely disregarded by the rest of the civilized galaxy as a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I always roleplayed under the assumption that the server took place in the frontier of space. I usually did it like this - There were four quadrants, and each quadrant was five sectors, but we were in the "frontier quadrant", where things weren't nearly as populated and the like. Explains the lack of presence of the main lore factions. But yeah, Antares seems pretty good to me. I still refer to the server as it.
Antares still seems nice to me... its got that... ring to it. plus like M-Bot said people have used it in game for the universe. Alpha through X y'all can change it but Antares is still nice
Sometimes, something simple wins over fancy or elaborate. And I think this is one of those times. Antares works for this little slice of galaxy out of any race homeworlds.
Edited to clarify that I meant a name for us OOCly. Also, Antares is a possibility, but I was curious to see if there were any alternatives.
