    Origins, The Quiet Kindred

Eons ago, lone amidst the blanket of still tranquil space and littered stars laid something of marvel. A binary star; a beautiful duet between two swirling pulsars. This matrimony was nothing special - at least, not yet. The binding of these sibling stars brought on something beautiful; wisping willows of stray light and stardust dancing and swirling between their orbits like tadpoles in a pond. Flashing lights that darted and dashed like the neurons of a mind betwixt them.

For how many billion years this elegant phenomena danced away in silent isolation, no one knows; but ominous beauty and grace were not all the twins shared. The puzzle within their cores clicked. Something intricate; something divine. Electromagnetic radiation pulsing from those flowering spirals reached far across the void. A reach of unquantifiable perception. The knowledge and wisdom of an omnipotent proportion beholden and absorbed throughout their very union. They could not see, nor speak, nor move – but they thought. All that their invisible fingers touched and felt for years uncountable.

Eventually, all things must perish. The twin’s gentle neutron light gradually dimmed with the passing decades. With time, they could carry on no longer … and began to fade. Their binary orbit pulled them together like a draining whirlpool before they collided. A booming quake echoed silently through the vacuum around them; a flash of electromagnetic energy and blinding white burst from their cores. The twins had one final whim; for the wisps that forever kept them company in the cold and empty plane to be born anew. In that monumental burst of energy, the superheated stardust that once swirled in the depths of their cores rained like seeds across the shroud of darkness. Fragments of their collective knowledge passed to every wisp that once called their orbit home. Fragments that cooled and solidified into delicately sculpted metal ornaments - a brand upon each star child that bestowed new life. In every direction the wisps flew, their long time home left to fade and dwindle in a cloud of lightless dust.

The wisps were primitive, abiotic organisms. Their bodies resembled tadpoles; a bulb of plasma containing their brand, and a wriggling tail that aided their locomotion through the void. Their true consciousness had yet to form, so the schools of wisps were left to survive off instinct alone. For several generations, they lived to consume, to multiply, and to migrate. There were many perilous light years of cold void between the primitive Nova and their eventual homeworld. Many of the migrating droves were unable to find sustenance, and perished as a result. Some were driven into the molten clutches of foreign stars, their existence lost amongst the inanimate plasma. It was luck that lead a single drove of wisps to their promised land; a massive, barren planetoid of jagged rock, boiling lakes, and fog. A lifeless plane that organics would call hell; and the Nova called home.

The malleable little wisps plummeted through the atmosphere - a shower of light raining from the aether to the surface below. Without a matured membrane, the wisps descended with the delicacy of a feather, and were scattered across the rock, spanning thousands of kilometers.

With an abundance of nutrients and minerals, the wisps were finally able to sate their hunger. The molten metal of their brands settled and shaped. Many forms began to arise from the malleable wisps. With sustenance, their membranes matured; and the form they’d been conceived with was set to to take shape. Small and large, creatures of starlight were born to the land - and with them, the humanoid Nova.

Simple, defected brands occupied the instinctive starlight creatures. The complicated brands .. They belonged to the Nova. Their own sentience was realized, and the Nova gathered. The first Nova were few; only several hundred. With no language, and nothing but the rocky landscape beneath their feet … the Nova were stranded. However, the Nova were quick to realize they weren’t alone. A feeling, a thought. Memories flashed within them, The Quiet Kindred’s wisdom and knowledge passed on through hazy glimpses beyond the veil. The Nova followed the Kindred’s Calling, and worked toward their legacy. They were destined to return to the stars one day, but they had to be patient. With their patience came reward; Society, culture, and technology. Over millennia the Nova matured as a species; from their primitive beginnings, to the Nova we have today.
