    :Flashpoint Mines : First Contact:

    View attachment 4479

Littered along the banks of Shimmer Lake, the remains of the Flashpoint Mines are common. While most of the tunnels are collapsed or flooded beyond any hope of entry, residents tripped on an old layout within the library, managing to locate a traversable workmans’ entrance that survived the flooding.

With this information in hand, a small team descended with the intent of scouting and mapping the subterranean construction, and to recover any usable resources or equipment.

The mines proved to be a winding, chaotic maze, not only because of areas inaccessible due to collapses or equipment failures, but also tunnels and work sites unaccounted for on the recovered blueprints.

But, the expedition forged on and braved the crumbling relic that time and nature forgot, delving into it’s choking abyss.

    :Events:

After gathering the expeditionary supplies prepared over the previous week, the team began their descent down the derelict steps. Emerging into the mine proper through one of the more stable stone structures, assumed to be a workmans’ barracks and storage area, they quickly found and loaded up on any useful mining supplies they could find; picks, flares, rope, and more.

Just below the barracks, they travelled across a rickety wooden bridge onto a non-operational cargo crane, connected to what appeared to be a railway loading system. Though the crane wasn’t functioning, thankfully its lighting was, illuminating the pitch black area. At the base of the crane, Ignis and Mary discovered a crate of geodes, Ignis recovering one of the stones.

Turning towards the eastern tunnels, they travelled over a series of suspended catwalks, where the team noted a strange machine below. No one was able to identify what it was, its purpose or scope currently unknown, assumed to be a piece of advanced mining equipment. As they continued, they were met with winding network of tunnels, their varying heights, inclines, and widths would require climbing, so they opted to backtrack and cover the more accessible tunnels first.

As they travelled back, this was when the team was ambushed by a pair of hunting Kormonts, flanking them from either side in the narrow tunnel.

The Kormont blocking their exit expanded its body and issued a rattling warning call, acting as a distraction while it’s hunting partner silently approached from the rear. Clementine spotted the creature in time, firing off several rounds as it pounced. While wounding it, the creature’s howling body still collided with her, knocking her prone on her back and pinned. Ignis reacted quickly, cleaving its skull with his sword before it could injure the woman, assisting to get her out from under the carcass once it was dead.

However, while Mary was distracted by the gunshots, the Kormont in front charged her, too quickly for her to accurately fire. It gored Mary underneath her arm with its horn, severely injuring her. Seeing that its hunting mate was dead, the creature attempted to retreat, Clementine mortally wounding it as it fled. With Mary incapacitated and heavily bleeding, the team had to evacuate as quickly as possible.

The group began their escape, Ignis taking the lead and Robert watching the rear with Mary’s pistol while Clementine assisted Mary. Entering back into the loading bay, they were able to sneak past another pair of Kormonts who were distracted feeding on the carcass of the one that Clementine had wounded.

After ascending the crane’s scaffolding stairs towards the entrance, the expedition barricaded themselves within the workmans’ barracks to keep the encroaching creatures back. Ignis and Robert held the room while Clementine carried Mary out of the mine, getting her to safety.

Ignis and Robert decided to further barricade the room, and during their efforts, they were ambushed by another hunting pair of Kormonts who had slipped in through a hole in the ceiling, pouncing on the two men from above.

One of the creatures caught and constricted Ignis, while Robert was attacked from behind, suffering a large bite wound on his shoulder. In a desperate maneuver to save himself, Ignis hurled his sword into the air. While failing to break free from his attacker, the blade thankfully slayed the Kormont on Robert. Robert, now free, unloaded Mary’s borrowed handgun into the beast constricting Ignis, killing it and allowing both men to escape. As they reached the stairwell, they heavily barricaded the entryway to the mines, ensuring themselves a safe escape.

With how dangerous the excursion proved to be, warning signs have been placed and the stairwell barricaded, disallowing any access to the facility, in or out. Until another expedition can be arranged, and its members properly prepared, the mines will remain sealed.

    :Results:

-The Flashpoint Mines clearly operate off of a source of power unavailable to the surface. While in disrepair, many of the facilities and electronics are still functioning. However, most of the hanging oil lanterns throughout the mines are broken or in need of fuel.

-Mining equipment litter the hallways and station. While some of it was in working condition, most of the tools were too derelict and rusted to stand up to any actual use.

-Mary and Ignis discovered a stash of unrefined geodes, Ignis currently in possession of one of the crystalline stones. It’s unknown at this time if these are what the mining operation was for.

-Large numbers of the serpentine ‘Kormont’ hounds, commonly seen in the western hills outside of town, have taken up residence in the old mines, proving themselves to be dangerous, cunning predators. Looking to the library for information, excerpts of Dr. Mia Jameson’s notes on the species were found, made publically available to keep visitors and residents informed on the danger the Kormonts present. Ignis recovered the carcass of one of the creatures for future research into its biology, namely it’s incredibly tough horn.
