Eons ago, two binary pulsar stars were home to billions of orbiting starlight wisps. Delicate circumstances graced the two pulsars with a united consciousness in which to harvest wisdom. Eventually, the two stars collapsed; their final act being to bestow sentience upon those billions of beautiful wisps through fragments of their being in the form of metal brands.

The primitive wisps were left alone, and migrated in droves into the void. While many perished, a single swarm found their promised land; a large barren planetoid of jagged stone, boiling lakes, and fog. Millions of wisps plummet from the atmosphere, littering a once lifeless planet. The wisps eventually began to mature and evolve into varying shapes and forms; one being the Nova.

Novaic culture & society developed over the course of a millennia, until they finally harnessed fusion & warp technology and returned to the void. The collective Nova took on the legacy left behind by their parent stars, The Quiet Kindred. Some anomalous Nova, however, were left with malformed brands that hindered their ability to feel the Kindred's Calling. Unable to truly belong, these nomadic Nova drift away from their native culture in hopes of belonging elsewhere.

Nova culture predominantly consists of 'Memorant Nova', the Nova who can sense the Kindred's Calling and possess a natural drive for unity and collective prosperity. Memorant Nova are pacifistic isolationists, and their communities rarely include outsiders. However, they are friendly and hospitable given the opportunity, and their expedition crews frequently visit aliens societies to gather perspective and experience.

Those Nova who do not sense the Kindred's Calling are labelled as Misbranded, and struggle to belong in Memorant society. For this reason, Misbranded Nova commonly depart and seek acceptance in other alien societies. Most Misbranded are nomadic drifters, and share an innate curiosity & wanderlust. Plenty of Misbranded Nova are born outside of Memorant culture, and may never learn about their origins.

The Nova are a complicated yet simple species. Their anatomy is similar to single celled organisms: a brand (nuclei), plasma (cytoplasm), and a membrane.
    • Nova can live up to 400-500 years. A Nova who suffers from White Dwarf syndrome may live to be 700.
    • Nova can withstand incredibly hot and cold temperatures with ease.
    • Nova do not need to breath, and can survive comfortably in the vacuum of space.
    • Nova are immune to conventional organic diseases, toxins, poisons, and radiation.
    • A Nova's brand is their brain, and incredibly crucial to their survival.
    • Nova must consume nutrients. They can consume both biotic and abiotic material. Processed minerals & organic goods are easier to dissolve, and therefore preferred.
    • Consuming high density matter (Lead & beyond) may cause disorientation, fatigue, and paralysis.
    • Breaches in a Nova's membrane will cause them to vent. Very minor breaches may seal naturally before any fatal level of plasma is lost, but larger wounds will require repair through patching or tying to prevent venting out.
    • Nova can regenerate lost limbs given enough time and nourishment.
    • Nova membrane may be scarred with 'sun spots' when wounds are improperly treated.

Novas do not breath, are resilient to extreme temperatures and immune to radioactivity. This means that most native Novaic technology is inoperable by organic species. Novaic engineering revolves primarily around thermal induction; either using the Nova's natural body heat or geothermal sources for power. Early Novaic engineering utilized steampower and cog work to create intricate machinery, some of which are still produced today either due to affordability or vintage appeal.
