So, as of now essentially every major faction is a military faction, not a government. I would imagine that nobody in the real world would ever go out of their way to travel to a sector where every planet is under martial law, with no confirmed rights or trials or anything. Seeing that, is anyone interested in working on the establishment of a faction that's actually a government and not a military regime? I'm thinking some sort of basic trial system (even if the jury has to be NPCs or whatever), some defined rights and punishments for crimes that are more than a day in prison. There would also be a nice bit of room for some government corruption and the like, to keep things interesting. As far as the purpose would go, I'm thinking we'd establish a basic colony -- a refugee camp, maybe? No idea. -- and invite people under the purpose of bringing some justice -- not lynch mobs, but actual justice -- to the sector. Alternatively, we could see about working with an already-established colony. So, any ideas? Criticism? I'm all ears. The biggest issue I could see is that we're already oversaturated with factions, but I think that given that about half of the existing factions are expressly dedicated to military matters (And a lot of the rest are inactive) it might be interesting to see something else for a change.
Well I'm trying to establish the RSSU aka The Republic of the Socialist Space Union. It is Socialist of course and I have been planning on it having a government. Yeah I agree, government.
i like the idea of an actual government. Also the law would have to be refined.Do you have any ideas for that already? I could imagine me playing a char in the damn labyrinth of bureaucracy, but we would need a city and enough people who life on that planet/colony. I would also like to finally have a colony that last longer than a few month:/ The up and downs of Hubs is annoying. One or 2 stable hubs would be good.
Well, obviously we won't exactly be able to write some big revised law book with hundreds of crimes without going insane, but just basic stuff to start off with like: (All incl. attempted, conspiracy; punishment varies depending on severity) - Murder: Death, life imprisonment - Manslaughter: Exile, imprisonment - Assault: Imprisonment - Theft: Imprisonment, fine of 2x value of object - Fraud: Imprisonment, fine - Trespassing: Fine etc etc. Punishments should be harsher than usual, to get it across that this is a Lawful Society and crimes are Bad Things with Consequences. As far as a court system goes, I'm thinking that more severe crimes should be put into court, with the arresting officer/group (or their lawyer, if applicable) gives testimony, the defendant (or their lawyer, if applicable) does the same, any witnesses and evidence get presented, a decision is made. Possible NPC jury, or maybe we could get people together to do it. Other things! Some form of democracy is fun! I'm thinking we'd have an 'inner council' or whatever of the founding members, and every 3-5 months someone would be elected as the figurehead of the faction from that council. This would be to avoid getting Hillbilly Joe elected on shits and giggles.
Of course, assuming that we would actually get enough people in the faction to be able to separate them.
Yes, it would be great if a system of law was actually developed for a colony in Antares. Too many issues are solved with violence when in an actual colony with set legal systems rather than guards would have courts. I have a prosecutor character that I've been keeping on hold until some form of government came along. I don't have much to contribute in terms of additions to the idea. The only issues I see is dealing with the invading type, and the new people. Giving the whole laws of the land ordeal just kind of wears away after multiple sayings. What I'd do for this is what I did for school when I made a club. Make a constitution with the laws clearly laid out and have the other roleplayers who have their characters in those distinct political positions be able to edit it. That's assuming a large group. Or rather than a modern day political system, why not use a simpler system from history? Like Rome. Twelve Tables, the Republic, and such I don't remember. Just throwing stuff out there.
I am all for this, to see an actual government and some actual organization. It would open up many roles and chance for role-play, and to have a colony that is actually y'know, monitored and secured by said government. I'd personally be most excited to actually play that prosecutor character I made long ago, but had no purpose; as there wasn't a courtroom to debate any crimes or felonies in. I'd be glad to contribute in any way possible to may this idea happen.
Me too, I'm all for this. However I've got a feeling that as soon as word ICly gets out that there's a colony not controlled by a military faction it will probably get bull rushed by Outcasts or other antagonistic characters.
With any luck we'll still have a police force, just not one with no responsibility to the people. Preferably with stun guns.
I'm gonna wish whoever tries this a whole lot of luck. It's been tried countless time, but every single time the faction/colony had some Achilles' heel. I'm not by any means saying it's impossible, just that it's certainly a commitment.
I'd love to see an actual government on Antares. (I have no idea of how to stop it from being invaded by outlaws and outcasts, though)
I cant think of many solutions that wouldnt involve a military. Maybe there would be some under-the-table dealings with the Outcasts and major terror/antagonistic organizations to keep them at bay, and the police force would take care of the rest of the bad guys?
There's been a discussion about that before, somewhere. Anyway, while it's not necessarily a bad idea, and it's worth a shot, the issue with terrorist or anarchist organizations is that they aren't in it for money, they're in it for the mayhem.
The easy solution seems like some soft of loose federation of existing colonies - individual colony leaders sending representatives to a central body to work towards unifying criminal code, taxation etc... throughout the civilized parts of the sector. This solution would allow colonies to retain their "independence" while achieving the same goals as an actual sector government and create new positions in their administration - ambassadors to the Antares Senate or something. (Sci-fi settings have senates, don't they? And federations?) This would of course need some sort of perfectly neutral group of people to organize and protect the proceedings - but whoever they turn out to be, they need to stay outside the actual decision making process, focusing on the implementation of senate's (?) decisions instead.
So far rights has been up for every colony themselves. The whole thing would be obsolete if only one colony would participate in this "Senate". However colonies could have their own 'police' and the 'senate' could handle the laws, which would involve the colony leaders to have a say in said senate to come up with a trade off of laws. And the actual faction could handle the 'courtyard', as it appeared most ppl wanted to be something like procurator.
I like this as well. I know of someone on this server who built such a location for a purpose like this. Unfortunately it never was completed but this would make sense. It would help connect colonies a bit more as well.
I think we should have a Federation. We could also have an Empire. Then we could have you could fly about in a spaceship and do odd jobs like deliver letters or shoot bad men.
