A friend just introduced me to an awesome server hosting company. Downside? Only hosted in Canada. However, the performance boost and the savings are WELL worth the change. Our cores will increase from 4 to 6, our memory from 32GB to 64GB, and our uplink connection to 1Gbs/s. There's also plenty of room to expand in the future! If you don't know what any of this means, just know it's a step up. This move will be taking place on February 14th February 22, where we'll have some downtime so I can do it. Nothing will be deleted, nothing will change, everything will move over. Not even the IP address will change (s1.playstarboundrp.com). We'll just get better server specs, better pricing, better everything! I do want to apologize to our EU players, who may get worse ping, but it's... it's... it's so good! I hope you forgive me. :< Update: Server host claims they can have the server online tonight. I may do the upgrade tonight at some point. Update #2: Nevermind that first one, I chose a different package. Back to the original schedule. Update #3: Got some bad news from my job, so I'm going to choose the cheaper package. They're offering our current setup, just much lower cost per month. Transition is still on schedule. Updated #4: Transition delayed from 3 days to 10 days.
Even with your google fibre optics, glorious Canadians come out on top. Bow before us you plebian Americans! Seriously though, server needs it and I look forward to having a better connection than anyone. Know where the server is hosted? If its anywhere near New Brunswick, Euro-Friends should still be able to connect effectively.
Starbound is VERY clientside so it's lag friendly. I doubt any lags. At least not for me with my golden service. It's great we can have an upgrade.
Updated the post. Found a better option that comes with 64GB instead of 128, but is more affordable. We really don't need that much more memory anyway.
Bad news update, sorry folks. We're maintaining our current server specs, but the good news is, I'll be paying much less per month so if something happens, we can stay online longer.
Another update, package has been delayed from 3 days to 10 days. Sorry, folks. Things are rapidly changing on my end.
I play FFXIV, which maintains global servers in Montreal as well, with very little issue (except on ultra hard boss fights). As I'm not engaging in ultra hard boss fights here on Starbound and keep my ping-reliant activities (bosses, Sector X exploration) to SP and migrate back to MP for roleplay and interaction/building, this shouldn't cause a latency issue/be an issue even if there is some latency. Glad you're reducing the overhead financial strain on yourself, but am concerned about the bad news from job. I hope you'll be okay.
Good news, seems that the company delivered ahead of schedule. The server is ready now. I may make the move tonight or tomorrow.
Shouldn't be any more of a difference than what they already feel. Latency for US based players will increase by approx. 20ms, but that should hardly be noticeable.
I Don't mind at all, if it's better it's betetr and I can still do stuff in singleplayer, or play other games, or actually try to have a life, oh haha nevermind that last one that's far too scary!
