Step 1. Open your Steam library.

Step 2. Right click Starbound, go to properties, click.

Step 3. Click the 'local files' tab, then click 'browse local files'.

Step 4. From here, navigate to the folder which contains the 'starbound' folder (default is 'common' when installed via steam).

Step 5. Copy the entire Starbound folder to another location (desktop, documents, anywhere that isn't Steam.)

Step 6. Run the appropriate starbound.exe (win32 if windows, etc) from this folder, or create a shortcut to it.

If you do this, Starbound will run from this folder and not use steam, and will function even if starbound updates on steam. To check if it works, click steam after you've launched the game and see if it is displaying 'playing starbound' on your friends list. If it isn't, you've done it correctly.

If my game is set up to automatically update on Steam, will it effect the saved files? Probably a dumb question, but I just want to make sure.

Probably another dumb question but why would I not want Starbound to update?

I will update the main game after creating a copy, so I can mod new items.

Updating your starbound would lock you out because we're not updating the server to 1.0 immediately because the lack of planet chat will be awful. Imagine 40 people talking in galaxy chat, all roleplaying in different places. That's what we'd be dealing with.

    already answered this.
