Its either a new race, or simply had to be put in to have hte npc penguin at the outpost, beacuse the name config file only has one name in it.

Pretty sure the 8th race is probably the mysterious race that constructed the gates. Maybe the same race that constructed the glitch and gave the avians technology, who knows.
If I had to make a guess then I'd say the Avali. That guy has worked super hard on that mod - he has all the tiered armor and weapons, plus a ship design, respawn animation, towns and stuff - heck, all the work's been done for them. Plus the head on that picture looks a lot like a lizard head with feathers.
Actually, this is the first time I've seen the Avali, (Had to look it up, not new to starbound, new to starbound modding), and I would play one of those no doubt.
Not necessarily, that was one of the races that were possibly going to be put into starbound from the beginning, some of the concepts had the space elves in them, but they were thrown out. Now, not to say that they cannot make a return, and actually be put into the game, but I dunno, we need more not-as-humanoid races. And imo, the Avali would be great, as the sprite doesn't even look humanoid.
Avali outweighs the other species. In uniqueness, alongside the difficulty of spriting. So I dont think its them, and the missings sockets on either side seem to be unique.

Chances are you won't get this. Chucklefish hasn't been big on making 'alien' aliens. We've got mammalian humanoid birds, mammalian humanoid fish, mammalian humanoid plants, mammalian humanoid star people, mammalian humanoid robots and mammalian humanoid monkeys (of two varieties).
This is what me myself and a few others are worried of. I mean, in lore, they /are/ as capable as anybody else. I'd love to take them as a joke, though. I think that's the issue.
